Hi! I’m Garrett, a fifth-year mechanical engineering major at Cal Poly SLO. I have returned from my year studying abroad in Stockholm, Sweden at KTH University. I will finish my bachelor’s degree at Cal Poly and graduate Spring 2026.

While I am studying mechanical engineering, my desire to be closer to the pursuit of knowledge has drawn me closer to physics and applied physics. I’ve had experience working both in industry and doing academic research, and I believe that the derivations, data analysis, and simulations that are most rewarding to me will be found by pursuing graduate school. To support this goal, I’ve extended my course curriculum to the core physics courses, as well as a few extra math courses. This has given me more appreciation for the underlying physics hidden within the empirical engineering formulas, and augments the problem-solving mindset I am developing through my mechanical engineering degree.

I especially enjoy the programming and simulation side of science. I’ve ben fostering my coding skills since weekly high school Java classes through the League of Amazing Programmers’. This blossomed into a passion for programming on my own, which has expanded to Python, MATLAB, and many other languages. This has developed into a confidence to dive into challenging problems with the comfort that I will pick up the tools along the way. I believe that for me to have a fulfilling career, I personally need my work to have a clear positive impact. My internship at Dexcom working on wearable glucose sensors, as well as my research project in the KTH medical imaging group, have both shown me that it is easiest to be proud of my work when the end goal, even if multiple steps removed from my current project, is a clear net positive to patients. So, whether it’s patients, customers, or the direct pursuit of societally relavent scientific knowledge, I hope to find a research opportunity in the biomedical space that supports my strong intrinsic motivation to solve technical problems.
